Cougar Facts

In the state of Texas, where I live, the mountain lion does, too.  How many of them are there? Nobody really knows.  Texas Parks and Wildlife has been claiming for at least a decade that the population of cats is expanding; yet, they have absolutely no proof of that.  TP&WD uses "sightings" as their means of estimating the cat population, the most expedient and least scientific of any management method, other than none at all.

Why is this?  Most land in Texas is privately owned.  That means the ranchers and landowners maintain a tremendous political clout, and most ranchers I have met have an overblown fear of the cats as do many other people.  This site is dedicated to providing information about the animals as a means of informing the public about them and to excite discussion both in and out of Texas about their fate, which is really in our hands.
